General Counselor Education and Supervision specialization

Counseling is one of the country's fastest growing professions, creating an accompanying need for counseling educators and supervisors. This rigorous Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral degree program includes online course work, residencies, and field experiences designed to build your clinical, teaching, research, and supervisory skills. Capella's degree program is one of few available online, and provides opportunities for you to potentially fulfill your internship experience working with counseling students enrolled in Capella's CACREP-accredited master's degree programs. People likely to be interested in this specialization include master's-level counselors interested in pursuing supervisory, faculty, research, or advanced practitioner positions in academic and clinical settings.

This specialization is not designed to meet licensure requirements for the counseling professions. If you are seeking information on professional licensure, please visit our Licensure Resource site.

This specialization requires course work and clinical experience, including a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship.

Applicants to the PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision must be graduates of a CACREP-accredited master's program or a master's program with equivalent curriculum (subject to Capella review).

Can you get hired with this CES degree?

December 2, 2010Cindy No one can answer that questions because I can't find anyone who has ever graduated from the program. If you call for information they tell you to apply and it might receive accrediation but all the colleges near me (I live in Tx) have never heard of the Capella CES degree. They even said they wouldn't hire someone who graduated from an online program for CES. So can you get hired? Who knows. I think I will wait to see some success stories before I spend the money and time for this degree.

Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision

October 4, 2010Valerie Why does the Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision program NOT prepare a student for licensure?

Licensure

June 20, 2011Brian I'll graduate from a 48s.h. M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling, but would like to pursue licensure in Arizona (requires 60s.h.) as an LAC in addition to working in schools. LAC licensure here demands courses that I won't have completed (namely a course in addictions, and a course in family therapy) - is there room in this program to include electives so that I can meet these requirements?

Accredidation concerns post doctoral program...

January 4, 2012Ashlie I am really interested in getting my PhD online for convenience reasons. However, my concern is that if you get your PhD from an unaccredited university, will this impact being hired by employers, agencies, hospitals, educational institutions etc... afterwards. I am struggling trying to make this decision, and I am interested in Capella's program.
